Redipuglia and the Military Tabernacle: A Thrilling Journey through the First World War
Guys, today I’m going to take you to a place you can’t miss if you love history. We’re in Friuli Venezia Giulia, near Gorizia, in front of one of the most monuments impressive and touching in Italy: the Military Tabernacle of Redipuglia.
Here rest the remains of more than 100,000 Italian soldiers who lost their lives in the First World War. That’s right: 100,000 lives cut short by the conflict. And when you stand in front of this immense stone staircase, with its 22 monumental steps, it’s impossible not to feel a chill.
Whether you want to touch history with your own hands, reflect on the impact of war or simply feel the thrill of the past, Redipuglia is a must-see destination.
Redipuglia: Italy’s Largest War Memorial
Redipuglia is not just a military cemetery. It’s the largest in Italy and one of the most
imposing in Europe. But how did it come to be?
- A bit of history:
- Previously, the soldiers of the Third Italian Armada were buried in Colle Sant’Elia, a simple military cemetery.
- In the 1930s, the Fascist regime wanted to build a grandiose monument to commemorate
the sacrifice of the Italian fighters.
The result? A gigantic memorial, with the names of the soldiers engraved in stone and, at the top, the tomb of the Duke of Aosta, commander of the Third Fleet.
- 100,187 soldiers rest here, of whom 60,000 are unknown. Each of them has a story that has unfortunately been forgotten.
Have you ever wondered what really happened here? A visit to Redipuglia will change your view of history.
